Special Constable Hillary Detlor has worked at the Cobourg Police Service since August 2019.
The special constable role at the Cobourg Police Service plays a large part in the safety of our community and reinforces the pillars of Tiered Policing. Crime prevention and education, community engagement and response, police assistance, prisoner transportation and court security are many of the tasks of the role.
Passionate about running, hiking, travelling, and community, it is no surprise that her favourite part of the job is conducting proactive community patrols. Setting out on a bike or on foot to engage with community members while she helps keep the community safe.
Hillary is routinely involved in events at the station and in the community, supporting partner agencies. The Run for Nova Scotia, the Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Special Olympics Ontario, the CAMH Rise and Shine challenge, Rebound’s Kilometer for Kids, and Cornerstone’s Walk A Mile, are just a few of the events Hillary has participated in.
With a positive attitude, strong work ethic and helpful nature, Hillary is an asset to the Cobourg Police Service team and the community. As she continues to support safety and well-being in the Town of Cobourg, we want to celebrate her most recent achievement.
Cheered on by her wife and children, on Sunday, July 10th, Hillary Detlor completed her first Ironman – the Subaru Ironman 70.3 MUSKOKA.
Until the Iron Man (an epic distance of 1.9km swim, a 90km bike ride, and a 21km run), Hillary’s longest run completed was a half marathon (21km).
Training for seven months and waking up early to work out, Hillary is open about the commitment and discipline needed to accomplish her goal.
“It was a huge challenge training during covid and keeping up on extracurricular commitments for my kids. I trained early in the morning, balancing work and family commitments during the day and evenings.”
Facing her fears also gave her a reason to be proud of completing the race. It wasn’t the biking or running that scared her about the epic distance – it was the swim that she saw as the challenge.
“My biggest fear was swimming in open water – overcoming the fear and making it through the swim leg was a huge accomplishment and the happiest moment of the race.”
When Hillary is not training for the next race, she can be found playing soccer on Monday nights in Brighton or driving the kids to their next sporting practice in the evening. We’re not surprised they are sporty too!
