COBOURG (April 4, 2025) – The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) has concluded its March Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP), which focused on vehicle insurance and document offences. This initiative was launched in response to an increased trend in the community of drivers operating vehicles without insurance and with expired licences on our roads.
The key objectives for the March STEP were to enhance compliance by educating the public on the importance of maintaining valid documentation and the legal consequences of non-compliance through conducting targeted checks and enforcement.
Fifty-three charges under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) were issued as a part of STEP, including 18 insurance offences and 30 document offences. Charges included:
- nine drive no insurance (minimum $5,000);
- one provide false insurance (minimum $5,000);
- three suspended drivers (minimum $1000);
- ten unlicensed drivers ($325); and
- and various other offences.
CPS urges all drivers to check their insurance and licence status and ensure they are up-to-date to avoid receiving a ticket and hefty fines.
A conviction of driving without insurance in the province of Ontario carries a minimum fine of $5,000 for the first offence. Driving without a valid licence carries a fine of $325.00. With the new automatically renewed vehicle permits, driving without a valid permit can result in a fine of $155.00.
