COBOURG (March 7, 2025) – The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) is excited to announce an Educational Initiative as part of the March Strategic Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP), scheduled for Tuesday, March 11th. This community-focused event aims to promote road safety and educate drivers on the importance of maintaining valid vehicle-related documentation.
During the Educational Initiative, CPS officers will be out in the community conducting checks on vehicle insurance, licences, and other related documents. To encourage compliance, there will be an amnesty period for those not currently in compliance, allowing them to update their documents without immediate penalties.
As a token of appreciation, drivers who are found to be compliant with all vehicle-related documentation will receive a small gift from the CPS. This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all road users in Cobourg.
A reminder that a conviction of driving without insurance in the province of Ontario carries a minimum fine of $5,000 for the first offence. Driving without a valid licence carries a fine of $325.00. With the new automatically renewed vehicle permits, driving without a valid permit can result in a fine of $155.00.
The Cobourg Police Service urges all drivers to check their insurance and licence status and ensure they are up-to-date. Visit the Service Ontario website to learn about automated licence plate renewals, check your plate status, and get information on driver’s licence renewal, vehicle registration, and insurance requirements in Ontario.
