COBOURG (March 4, 2025) – The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) is launching a Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP) for March, focusing on vehicle insurance and document offences. This initiative comes in response to an increased trend in the community of drivers operating vehicles without insurance and with expired licences on our roads.
CPS is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community’s drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Through STEP, CPS applied a comprehensive approach that includes engagement, education, and enforcement. The goal is to create safer roads for everyone by fostering a culture of responsible driving and compliance with traffic laws.
The key objectives for the March STEP are to enhance compliance by educating the public on the importance of maintaining valid documentation and the legal consequences of non-compliance through conducting targeted checks and enforcement.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of our community. Driving without insurance or an expired licence, or licence plate, puts the driver at risk and endangers other road users. This project aims to address these issues head-on and promote responsible driving habits.” – Constable Taylor Emmerton, Cobourg Police Service
A conviction of driving without insurance in the province of Ontario carries a minimum fine of $5,000 for the first offence. Driving without a valid licence carries a fine of $325.00. With the new automatically renewed vehicle permits, driving without a valid permit can result in a fine of $155.00.
The Cobourg Police Service urges all drivers to check their insurance and licence status and ensure they are up-to-date.
