Cobourg Police Service, Port Hope Police Service, and Community Living & Respite Northumberland join forces to support Special Olympians across Ontario

COBOURG (January 24, 2025) – Cobourg Police Service (CPS) and Port Hope Police Service (PHPS) partner with Community Living & Respite Care Northumberland (Community Living) to participate in the 2025 Polar Plunge, joining police services, communities, and individuals across Ontario to support Special Olympics

On March 9, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at the Cobourg Marina Boat launch, CPS, PHPS, Community Living, and local Special Olympic athletes will take the plunge. Joined by other first responders, municipal staff, local officials and local residents, the polar plunge event is sure to be entertaining and memorable.

In 2023 and 2024, the local Polar Plunge has raised over $27,000 thanks to participant fundraising efforts and generous donors in the community. We hope to achieve a similar outcome this year.

The community is invited to register to plunge, make a donation, or attend to cheer on the participants as they take on the icy waters of Lake Ontario, raising awareness and money to support over 26,000 Special Olympics athletes across Ontario!

About the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run and the Ontario Polar Plunge

Police services across Ontario have a strong relationship with Special Olympics, participating in events through the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) since 1987. These events raise awareness and funds to support Special Olympics programming and help enrich the lives of athletes with intellectual disabilities through the transformative power of sport.

Over the past 38 years, the LETR has evolved to encompass a variety of fundraising platforms, including the annual Torch Run (in June) and the Polar Plunge. The Polar Plunge is one of the largest fundraising events of the calendar year for the LETR. This year’s fundraising goal for the Ontario Polar Plunge campaign is $1,000,000.

Last year, the local Cobourg/Port Hope Polar Plunge raised over $27,000 thanks to participant fundraising efforts and generous donors in the community contributing to the overall Provincial goal.
