The community is invited to provide feedback before a final decision is made

COBOURG (July 14, 2021) – The Cobourg Police Services Board (the Board) will receive a report on the potential deployment of body-worn cameras in Cobourg at the July meeting. The community is invited to view the report presentation and provide feedback before a final decision is made.

Last summer, the Cobourg Police Service (CPS) conducted a public survey on the use of body-worn cameras. The majority of the 213 respondents supported body-worn cameras in Cobourg (over 90%).

Since the survey, CPS has conducted further review of body-worn cameras and consulted on their anticipated use with community partners, including health care and education partners. Additional research on a body-worn camera program at a police service of a similar size to CPS has also been completed.

The body-worn camera report will be presented to the Board on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at the Cobourg Police Services Board meeting at Venture 13 (739 D’Arcy Street, Cobourg). The presentation will cover anticipated results and impacts of a body-worn camera program, digital management strategy, and future deployment needs.

After the presentation, the Board will seek public feedback before making a final decision on body-worn cameras at CPS. If supported by the Board, a body-worn camera program would be considered for implementation in January of 2022.

“The Board is committed to building public trust and remaining accountable to the community we serve. We strive to make informed and fiscally responsible decisions that enhance public safety and the safety of our members,” says Chair Dean Pepper, Cobourg Police Services Board. “After conducting our public survey on the use of body-worn cameras last year, Chief VandeGraaf and his team proceeded with an investigation into the potential merits and challenges associated with the use of body-worn cameras at CPS, including a deep dive into the impact on operations, privacy best practices, and cost. We invite the public to join the Board meeting to hear the report and submit their input to the Board before we make a final decision at the August Board meeting.”

The Cobourg Police Services Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 20, 2021, starting at 9:00 am in the lecture theatre at Venture 13. The agenda package, including the body-worn camera report, will be available on www.cobourg.ca/escribe before the meeting.
